Silk fibroin (SF) and methylcellulose (MC) scaffolds were fabricated in different ratios of 100% SF, SF:MC (90:10), SF:MC (80:20), and 100% MC. The morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy before mechanical testing and culturing with osteoblasts to evaluate cell viability and proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition, and protein absorption. SF/MC had interconnecting pores, network structures, low mechanical properties, spherical cells, cell proliferation at the early stage, high ALP activity, and fairly good calcium deposition along with protein absorption. SF:MC (90:10) had bone nucleation and biological signal attachment that showed promise for the bone‒cartilage interface.
