ABSTRACT The discovery of antibiotics has transformed public health. Yet, the injudicious and unregulated use of these agents for prophylactic, sub-therapeutic and therapeutic purposes both in clinical settings and animal production led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. As new sets of drugs have appeared, microbes have adjusted, evolving with another resistant protective mechanism to evade and escape the new antimicrobial assault. Some of the alternatives that have proven potent in addressing the resistance problem include the use of bioactive substances in plant or the bioenhancer approach which integrates both the synthetic and natural products in treating infections caused by pathogenic organisms. This review provides information on the effectiveness of phytochemicals to curb the menace of antibiotic resistance.
