ABSTRACT Smallholder farmers, responsible for most of the developing world’s food production, remain largely outside formal banking systems, leading many to rely on high-cost informal lenders. This commentary explores how green technology and innovative finance can enhance financial accessibility and environmental sustainability for smallholder farmers. It notes that existing banking practices favour larger corporate clients and fossil-fuel investment, leaving smallholders without appropriate products or support. Drawing on a structured review of academic and grey literature, the study finds that banks integrating green financial tools such as climate-resilient loans, sustainable insurance products and renewable energy financing, alongside digital platforms, including mobile credit scoring and agent banking, can significantly improve inclusion. Partnerships between banks, microfinance institutions, agri-tech firms and development agencies are particularly effective in delivering practical solutions that support climate-smart agriculture. The findings suggest that targeted innovations have the potential not only to enhance financial accessibility but also to promote broader environmental and social benefits in rural economies.
