The pressing demands of urban development, driven by the rapid escalation of pressure in fields of socio-economics and sustainability, have presented opportunities for a resilient future for generations to come. However, this development has presented a plethora of challenges that pose as hindrances to the successful integration of regulatory frameworks. A systematic literature review synthesis of 154 articles rigorously screened through peer-reviewed works in the field of urban development published over the past 5 decades’ aids in identifying the literature gaps and challenges hindering the optimal execution of development frameworks. The process involves investigating the evolution of urban development attributes, such as the built environment, adaptive reuse, culture, community and economy, that correspond with the ideologies of the Open Building Movement (OBM), prioritizing building flexibility in response to changes. By identifying the major challenges and gaps in the literature and leveraging the principles of OBM, this paper develops a practical multidisciplinary Planning Integrated Toolkit – PLANiT – for providing actionable insights for sustainable urban development.
