ABSTRACT

A quantitative morphologic study has been made of organ composition in infants with diabetic mothers. Cellular hyperplasia and hypertrophy were responsible for the organ enlargement observed in 21 overweight infants. This abnormal growth is most easily attributable to fetal hyperinsulinism. Four underweight infants had anatomic evidences of prenatal malnutrition. Infants in both groups had some evidences of hyperadrenocorticism.
