Genetic selection programmes of cultured species are still in their infancy. The assessment of genetic resources in natural populations is an essential starting point in the design of genetic selection programmes. Information from both neutral genetic markers and quantitative traits will be necessary for this task. Microsatellite markers constitute an indispensable tool for parentage analysis, both for broodstock selection and for the development of genetic selection plans. Different chromosome set manipulation products can be obtained for culture improvement, among which triploids and gynogenetics are the most relevant for obtaining both sterile and all-female populations. The application of genetic maps for QTL identification and microarrays for functional genomic analysis are being used in aquaculture.
