Atherosclerosis is initiated and propagated over decades with no overt clinical symptoms. The complexity and chronicity of its pathophysiological process have been a major challenge to fully define molecular mechanisms and explore more effective therapeutic targets. This Recent Highlights series summarizes ATVB articles published in 2017 and 2018 on the traditional animal model systems and new approaches that have become powerful tools for studying pathogenesis and mechanisms of atherosclerosis.
