ABSTRACT

Section 2.1 addresses the age-old question of “exactly what is a tumor, and how are they different from other swellings in the body?” Sections 2.2 and 2.3 give accounts of views on this question, especially after the description of cell theory (1839), and also show how much of the current terminology of tumor pathology was developed at this time. Sections 2.4–2.8 describe the full chronology of “somatic mutation” theories of tumors to the present time. Section 2.9 details other theories and related concepts of tumors. Section 2.10 is concerned with current attempts to define malignant tumors, while Section 2.11 points out that published considerations of tumors have paid little attention to the fact that tumors occur in significantly different types, but all from the one genome.
